In this issue: Mercaris Data Service launch and how to subscribe; Mercaris participating in Non-GMO Ingredient Working Group, convened by Green America

It's Here!

Mercaris Data Service Now Live

If you are reading this, you probably know it is our mission to provide vital market information to the organic and non-GMO sectors to enable their growth and development.

We are excited to report that we are making important headway. We were proud to announce the launch of the Mercaris Data Service at the Natural Products Expo East Trade Show on September 27! We are grateful to many of you for being there, and to Whole Foods Market, our first subscriber. (To read more, check out our press release.)

This is an exciting development! For the first time, the industry will have access to Mercaris market data including:
  • Spot vs. forward prices
  • U.S. regional basis prices
  • Canadian prices
  • Food vs. feed prices
  • Amounts of U.S. organic grain imports
  • And much more!
We began collecting cash prices in June 2013 with our grain survey. In just a few months, we've made great strides in obtaining the data that forms the backbone of the Mercaris Data Service. About 40 individual mills, elevators, and brokers are participating in the survey anonymously.

The survey information is now reported via the Mercaris Data Service, representing weighted average prices from over 2 million bushels of physical trades across organic soybean, wheat, and corn crops (including six classes of wheat), and delivered prices from a wide geographic range, including 18 U.S. States and two Canadian provinces.

And, we aren’t finished yet! Throughout the Fall we’ll be adding more survey participants, increasing the frequency of our price updates, and expanding our coverage to include non-GMO corn and soybeans. Plus, we’ll supplement the hard numbers with our own analysis of market trends.

This would not be possible without the work and input of many different stakeholders who are active in organic grain markets. Many of you have told us how important it is to have granular, accurate market data, available in an easy-to-use format. And we have listened. We are hoping that the Mercaris Data Service becomes your go-to place for this vital information.
There are two ways to access our market reports. If you are a first handler of non-GMO corn or soybeans, or organic corn, soybeans or wheat, you may access to our price reports free of charge by joining the survey. Or, you can subscribe to our price & trade reports directly. The monthly or yearly subscription rates vary according to how many different crops you follow.

We are continuously hard at work to provide you with market fundamentals so that you can focus on the important work of growing and handling organic and non-GMO crops and building your businesses! As always, we welcome and appreciate your feedback.

Mercaris joins Working Group for Non-GMO Ingredients

We are pleased to announce that we joined the Non-GMO Ingredient Working Group, convened by Green America. The working group is a multi-stakeholder initiative to rebuild non-GMO ingredient supply in the U.S. The Group will work on practical solutions ranging from seed supply, to processing capacity, to policy issues that contribute to a vital and growing non-GMO sector.
