Mercaris Announces 30% Increase in Certified Organic Grain Acreage for 2017



Silver Spring, MD, November 7, 2017—In a presentation made at the Organic & Non-GMO Forum in St. Louis, Missouri, Mercaris released its 2017 Organic & Non-GMO Acreage Report. This is the second iteration of the report, which provides a detailed look into organic and non-GMO acreage data and provides extensive analysis of production by crop and by state. Key findings from the 2017 report include:

  • US acreage for organic grains—corn, wheat, oats, and soy—increased by more than 30% over 2016 estimates.
  • A total of 17,188 farms in the US were certified organic as of October 2017, a 15% increase from last year.
  • Total certified organic acreage for 2017 is estimated at 6.4 million acres.
